Up Against The Wall
High school dances, where crushes turned on a heartbeat until they fell into heart-break.
CCR, Smoke On The Water, and Stairway, all playing while boys lined one side of the dance floor and girls lined the other. A few were brave. We danced and didn’t care.
That is until the slow song. Then we went to the wall and the couples ruled supreme.
Watching the pairing, girls wrapped around the boys necks as the boys wrapped their hands wherever they could, the music played and they all swayed.
It’s universal for most of my age group. We all had the dance.
This one always brought them to the floor. It was an oldie in 1973, but now it’s ancient.
In some ways so am I, but I still remember 16 and the dances in the old gym. The room that smelled of sweaty socks and sloe gin.
So here’s to the dance.
