Jim Croce

No explanation.

No reason to define.

Just beautiful writing.

Lost to soon.

  1. In high school I was the biggest Jim Croce fan the world has ever known. My pals and I learned that he was going to play Minneapolis in the fall of our senior year. Plans were set in motion to score tickets and attend. Then of course the plane crash in September 1973. We were devastated.

Some people might scoff at this comparison. But for me that was as profound as Lennon’s death eight years later. As with Lennon, I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news.

I’ve mentioned any times on the air that if Jim Croce were to arrive on the scene today, radio programmers would have no idea where to put in him. He wouldn’t fit into any of their cubby holes. Too lighthearted for a rock station, too clever and witty for country, not angsty enough for alternative rock. It’s very likely he just wouldn’t get any airplay.

  2. He was on of he finest song writers of our generation. He,like Zevon and a handful of others, may have been too smart for the room as they say (whoever they are). What I have found is that many of the young ones that come into the shop know and listen to Croce. That speaks volumes to his talent and legacy. Thanks for sharing that story Scott. I feel bad for you missed opportunity.
